Registering on the electoral roll after naturalization

Since 2019 registration is automatic for people who became French; it is still worth checking.

According to service-public.gouv.fr, a person who became French from 2019 onwards is automatically registered on the electoral roll, on the basis of article L11 II 2° of the Electoral Code. For people who became French before 2019, the page suggests checking the registration and, if it did not happen, applying for it.

Registration can be requested all year round. Online, you need proof of address less than three months old and proof of identity. At the town hall or by post, cerfa form no. 12669 is needed as well. Someone else can file the application for you with a signed authorisation and your documents.

For a postal application, the official page states that the town hall must receive it no later than the sixth Friday before the first round of the vote. From abroad, registration goes through the register of French nationals living outside France, or directly at the consulate or embassy.

Even where registration is automatic it is wise to check it: it is the condition for voting, and the voter card is sent to your home no later than three days before the first round.

What to prepare

  • A French identity document (or your decree, while waiting for one)
  • Proof of address less than 3 months old
  • Cerfa form no. 12669 for an application at the town hall or by post
AlertJO is not a public administration and handles none of these steps. The information on this page summarises service-public.gouv.fr pages, listed at the bottom with the day we read them.
